At Sunnyslope the Artspace students were divided into 5 creative teams: The Low Rider Crew, The Tigers, The Dalmations, Space Art, and JAJ. Each team choreographed and performed their own skit based on the idea of the future and who they want to become as they grow up. The designed and produced all of their own props and costumes. Many parents came to watch and it was a great success. WAY TO GO SUNNYSLOPE ARTSPACERS!!!!

April 21 & 23

Who do we want to be when we grow up? And where do we want to go? These are the questions that Sunnyslope Artspace students asked themselves this week. We decided its never to young to start thinking about what you want to be when you grow up. We took the time to design a life plan mapping out "What" we want to be. Gillian, a 4th grade Sunnyslope student stated that "I want to be the President. Because I want to save animals." Among the other artspace students we had kids who wanted to be in the milatary, professional football, soccer, and basket ball players, doctors, chefs, cheerleaders, singers, and some kids just wanted to be famous. David wants to be a superhero. The kids also stated where they wanted to live. Some of the kids wanted to stay in Arizona, some wanted to move away to Mexico or other parts of the United States, and you can guess who was heading to the White House. The students also perclaimed why they choose the professions they did. Many of the students wanted to help others. Keep your eyes open for these kids in the future, because they are America's future.

Using the ideas that we came up with for our future we decided to integrate all of our artistic skills including drawing, architecture, sculpting, design, creative movement, and musicality in original performances. Each creative team choreographed, produced, and make the costumes and sets for their own skit. This week we got to work scripting and creating all of these props.

April 16

Today began with some music appreciation. We learned that the kids of artspace are the same age of many famous musicians such as Beethoven and the Jonahs Brothers. This made us think....what do we want to do, who do we want to be, and where do we want to go? This segued into the future section of our final performance coming up in a few weeks. We drew pictures and mapped out these ideas to help plan for our future.

April 14

Today we told stories with our bodies through movement choreography based on our name. The students wrote out their name and with some constructional guiding they created a movement pattern with their body. This was very successful and a lot of fun. On top of that we got to play some games afterward!!! Score!

April 7 & 9

Sunnyslope testing....no artspace :(

March 31 & April 2

Musical instrument success!!! The artspace students successfully made musical instruments including guitars and musical shakers! The kids had a lot of fun putting their own personal flare into the painting and decorating of these instruments!!! We also worked on creating each creative teams theme song...Watch out Jonahs Brothers....Sunnyslopes artspace kids are coming through with loads of musical talent!

March 24 & 26

Great news!!! Artspacing is growing and we keep getting new kids! Therefore we had to add another creative team in Sunnyslope. With the creation of an additional team we moved some kids around and have 5 teams: The Tigers, The Dalmatians, Space Arts, JCJ and The Crew. This week we saw what we could recieve with our Artspace points...some cool T-shirts, hats, bags and tattoos. Everyone is very excited about Artspace and racking up some points. We also began the musical section of story telling. We began making musical instruments that we will use to tell stories through music. We are making guitars and shakers. On Thursday we began by designing and painting our instruments. Next week we will continue as well as create our creative team's theme song with xelophones.

March 17 &19

Sunnyslope is on Spring Break....We'll be back with more fun next week!!

March 10 & 12

This week we worked on Body Mapping. This was a lot of fun. We were able to trace our bodies and decorated them to create a visual story about US! The students had a lot of fun with this...and surprise...they even got quiet! Great work Artspacers!!!

March 5

We worked in new groups chosen at random to tell the story of 4 completely different types of environments: The Big City, Outerspace, Rainforest, and the Ocean. Through drawing we told stories about what goes on in all of these very different places. It was a lot of fun and the students had a great time working together to create these pictures.

March 3

Learning about someone new. Today we interviewed a partner about one of their life experiences from their timeline. We asked them questions to get a greater understanding of their story. From there the students drew a storyboard about that event. It was a lot of fun learning about someone else!!

February 24 & 26

With some new members in Artspace we continued our life mapping exercises. In our creative teams we made a large group life timeline, mapping out all the important events in each student's life. It was really fun to see the similarities in all the students as well as their differences. We also went outside to play some fun games and gain Artspace points.

February 19

Today we started our "Life Mapping" section of Storytelling. Each student thought about all of the important things that have happened to them throughout their lives such as favorite vacations, the birth of siblings, winning sports tournaments, etc. Then they created their own timeline. Next week we will be putting these events together in our Creative Teams to create a group timeline. At the end of Artspace we went outside to play Bird, Beast, Fish. A team building activity where using charades the students acted out different animals. This was a lot of fun, and a way to gain points for their creative teams.

February 17th

Artspace is back at Sunnyslope after a week of Parent-Teacher Conferences. We welcomed some new faces into Artspace. We started off the session by creating Creative Teams. We wanted to get to know each other a little better so we broke away from our usual "clicks" to meet new friends in our Creative Teams. We created names for each Creative Team. Welcoming the Eagles, the 3 Homies, the Anialaters, and The Arizona Artists. We started by creating our team banners, after each team agreed on their name of course. Then we went outside to play Ships and Sailors, a fun team building game in which each creative team had the opportunity to gain points.

Making the Pholot Collages!

February 3 & 5

This week we finished working on our Photo Collages. The kids had a lot of fun searching for photos in magazines that really told the story of who they are and what they like. A lot of kids even brought actual photos in from home. After they finished hunting down all the photos they glued them together in a nice collage. Then it was time to add glitter and fare. What a fun decorative way to express who we are!

January 29

Continuing on with our theme of Storytelling today we began working on collages. The students brought in pictures and images from home that they felt best described them. We then spent the class searching through magazines and newspapers to find other images that help tell their story. This is a project that the kids really seem to enjoy and they are having a lot of fun learning about each other. Next week we will continue these collages as we put them together and make them look FANCY!!!

January 27

Today was taught by the two Becki's (Becky and Bekki). We started off the day by each student presenting and explaining their name poem. Once that was finished we moved outside to begin a creative movement exercise. (A great idea since both instructors today are dance instructors). Since the students just finished telling the story of their name with words, they now started using creative movement to tell their story. The students made each letter of their name with their body. Then they developed a transition from one letter to the next, for example by doing a karate kick or a spin. Once they were finished they put each movement together and Voila...the story of each student told through the context of their bodies.

January 20 & January 22

Continuing on with STORYTELLING, we have been learning about all of our students personal stories. This week the students worked on "Name Poems." Using the letters of their names the students came up with different words that they felt described, and told a story about themselves. Then the students got very creative in coloring, drawing, and decorating their poems. The students all had a lot of fun creating these poems. We received a lot of positive feedback from all the students about this activity. In next weeks lessons we will begin with presenting everyone's poems to the entire group.

January 15

Today Phil taught with Becky, their former Artspace teacher. Becky came in to work with the students on PROJECTION. The lesson emphasized how projection coincides with movement. We did two activities: The Big Wind Blows, which is a fun activity in which the students learn a lot about one another. One student stands in the middle of the circle and says "The big wind blows every one with (for example) 'a sister'," and those students with a sister move to a new spot in the circle, and whoever is last comes into the center to give the next command. Then we played Zip Zap Zop. This game requires memorization, quick thinking, and focus. This was very difficult and a lot of fun. The students also recieved their nametags, which were laminated for them.

January 13

First Day back in Artspace!! Today was introduction day. We met the new students and the instructors; returning this session is Phil along with a new addition, Bekki. We started today by making name tags that we will use throughout the session. The students decorated the name tags to let us know more about them. After we finished we went outside to play some "getting to know you" games. We started with two truths and a lie, where each student got a partner (someone that they didn't know) and told them two things about themselves that were true, and one thing that was false. Then their partner guessed which was the untrue fact. Then we played Add 'Em Up a very fun partnering math game. Everyone seemed very excited to be in Artspace and are looking forward to this semester!!
