April 16

Today began with some music appreciation. We learned that the kids of artspace are the same age of many famous musicians such as Beethoven and the Jonahs Brothers. This made us think....what do we want to do, who do we want to be, and where do we want to go? This segued into the future section of our final performance coming up in a few weeks. We drew pictures and mapped out these ideas to help plan for our future.

April 14

Today we told stories with our bodies through movement choreography based on our name. The students wrote out their name and with some constructional guiding they created a movement pattern with their body. This was very successful and a lot of fun. On top of that we got to play some games afterward!!! Score!

April 7 & 9

Sunnyslope testing....no artspace :(

March 31 & April 2

Musical instrument success!!! The artspace students successfully made musical instruments including guitars and musical shakers! The kids had a lot of fun putting their own personal flare into the painting and decorating of these instruments!!! We also worked on creating each creative teams theme song...Watch out Jonahs Brothers....Sunnyslopes artspace kids are coming through with loads of musical talent!

About ArtSpace

Artspace is a 21st Century Community Learning Center which provides an interdisciplinary arts experience for children and youth through out the Phoenix area. Created by a partnership between the Herberger College of the Arts, the Arizona Department of Education, the Phoenix Office of Arts & Culture and the Arizona State Library System. Artspace's vision is to establish a new model of educational experience to ensure students are successful in school and can make a positive impact in the community. The purpose of this program is to develop the abilities of students to create, perform and respond to works of art.

ASU ArtSpace programming is transdisciplinary, encompassing multiple fine arts and design disciplines. Two Graduate Student instructors are assigned to each school. While multiple fine arts and design disciplines will be touched upon in ArtSpace, the strengths and disciplinary focus of each school's instructors will be focused upon, making each ASU ArtSpace site unique. In order to add continuity to the transdisciplinary programing, each school will be focused around the theme. Sunnyslope's theme is STORYTELLING.

About the Instructors

Phillip Suzuki is a Double Bassists currently pursuing a MM Degree in Music Performance at Arizona State University. He has played professionally across the country and internationally, including performances in Michigan, Indiana, South Carolina, China, Japan, and Norway. Phillip also maintains a private studio teaching Double Bassto a variety of students.

Rebecca Blair Hillerby graduated from Slippery Rock University with a Bachelors of the Arts in Dance. Since her graduation she has been a freelance performer, choreographer, and instructor. Rebecca has performed and taught cheerleading and dance throughout the United States and Eurpope. She is currently attending Arizona State University working toward recieving her MFA in Dance.
